I was born in a suburb of Chicago. I got a BA in Asian Studies from the University of Illinois and lived in Japan for a year. I did Master’s Work in ESOL/Instructional Systems Development. I was Assistant Director of the Long Island Office of the American Jewish Committee.
In your opinion, what importance, if any, does the existence of a Jewish state have to you personally and to Jewish people in general?
“Eretz Yisrael has been a cornerstone of Judaism for thousands of years, spiritually and culturally. The state of Israel continues to be so, and is the physical and symbolic entity that provides a ‘home’ and a refuge for Jews.”
Do you feel committed in some way to defend the future existence of Israel?
“Yes.”
Do you affiliate yourself with a specific denomination in Judaism? What is your view regarding the dominance of the Orthodox denomination in Israel religious establishment?
“I consider myself to be Conservative. I think the dominance of the Orthodox is undemocratic as they represent only 20-25% of the population.”
Do you feel morally responsible for Israel’s actions (such as its management of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict?
“Yes, to a certain degree—Kol Yisrael areivim zeh b’zeh–especially if we take pride in Israel’s accomplishments. We can’t have it two ways…”
In your opinion, what is the main thing Israelis fail to understand about the reality of being Jewish outside of Israel?
“That we have a connection to Israel even though we are in the diaspora and haven’t sacrificed nearly as much as they have.”
How would you describe Israel’s policy (formally and in practice) regarding its relationship with the Diaspora?
“Similar to other nation states’ practice in regard to the US: acting in what they feel are their own best self interests. We just seem to have a different standard.”
In your opinion, does Israel have an obligation to defend and help Jewish communities in need?
“Yes.”
Have you ever been to Israel? if you have, can you summarize your impression from the Israeli reality?
“Yes, proud and humbled.”
Can you tell us a bit about the Jewish community in your hometown? Is it organized? Are there any community activities?
“According to the most recent Federation survey, there are 8000 Jews in the seven counties surrounding and including Nashville. 45% Reform, 24% Conservative, 10% Orthodox, the rest ‘secular’ or ‘just Jewish’ or ‘other’.”
